USS Yorktown CV 5 - "The Cost of Holding the Line"

USS Yorktown CV 5 - In today's episode I'm going to review the short but eventful career of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-5). The original Yorktown, not CV-10 which is located in Charleston, SC, was the lead ship of her class and spent the early days of the Pacific War holding the line and checking Japanese expansion in the Pacific. She participated in some of the early carrier raids made by the USN, the Battle of the Coral Sea, and the Battle of Midway, where she was lost. Her wreck was discovered in 1998 by Dr. Robert Ballard, and since, has been visited by several other expeditions. In 2025, she was extensively surveyed, which led to several interesting discoveries.
