Iceland is most famous for its rugged landscapes and scenery. In this episode of our Iceland series, we visited some of the most popular cliffs and canyons. FJADRARGLJUFUR Fjadrargljufur is translated as "feather river canyon". It is located in south east Iceland. The Fjadra river flows through it. The canyon has steep walls and winding water. It is up to 100 m deep and about 2 kilometres long. It is located near the Ring Road, so it is easily accessible. Fjadrargljufur is believed to have formed at the end of the last ice age, or about 9 thousand years ago. When the glacier retreated, a lagoon formed in the valley behind the canyon. Drainage water from the lagoon then ran its course over the area. A few years back, Fjadrargljufur became a victim of its skyrocketing popularity because it was featured in Justin Bieber's “I'll Show You” video clip. Then the inevitable happened, and the canyon was closed. But after a much-needed break to recover and after tourism authorities working in the area installed ropes and built designated paths to enjoy the views, the canyon is open again. ARNARSTAPI Arnarstapi is a small fishing village with a beautiful shoreline at the foot of Mt. Stapafell, on the southern side of Snaefellsnes, Iceland. Once you arrive in the village, Bardur Snaefellsas, a giant rock statue is immediately visible. Bardur is a character from ancient Icelandic saga and is half troll-half man believed to be the protector of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The beach at Arnarstapi holds a particular attraction. It has an eroded circular stone arch, called Gatklettur Arch Rock, and here, the interplay of spectacular waves and the light of the sun create a fascinating spectacle The interesting element is the basalt column formations, the small caves and the lava landforms along the coastline Along the coast is a hiking path from Arnarstapi to Hellenar. This hike is a beautiful path of lava fields and stunning rock formations. We didn't have time to walk the 2.5k trail, but just stopping and hanging out at the top of the cliff for a while was awesome. LATRABJARG Latrabjarg is situated in Westfjords and is a destination not that many travelers include in their Iceland itinerary. It is Iceland’s largest sea cliff stretching 14 kilometres and peaking at a height of 441 metres. The cliffs are breathtaking and with strong wind. This majestic cliff’s claim to fame is that it is the western most point in Europe and hosts Iceland’s greatest concentration of seabirds including puffins, northern gannets, guillemots and razorbills. We did not get to see any puffins as they have migrated elsewhere when we arrive. STUDLAGIL Studlagil Canyon can be found in East Iceland in the Glacier Valley called Jokuldalur. One of the reasons Studlagil had remained relatively unknown for a long time is because it can be hard to get there. There are limited signage or markings on the route Studlagil Canyon is famed for its basalt rock columns and a stunning blue-green glacial river to contrast The basalt rock columns you can see at Studlagil are the same type as at the famous Reynisfjara black sand beach near Vik. But it’s Studlagil that is claimed to have the largest number of these basalt columns in Iceland. One can hike down the terrain onto the basalt rock but need to be conscious of their surroundings and travel at their own risk. 0:00 Iceland Travel Road Trip 0:55 Fjadrargljufur Canyon 2:56 Arnarstapi 5:00 Latrabjarg 6:29 Studlagil Canyon #iceland #icelandtravel #icelandroadtrip #westfjords @KCfaith Disclaimer: The information provided by us is our opinion and is provided for entertainment and informational purposes only.
