The band began as a fictional concept while Butler was recording demos with producer Liam Sternberg, taking their name from a "Waitresses Unite" shirt at Jerry's Diner Formation and Early Days Patty Donahue became the band's frontwoman after volunteering to sing "I Know What Boys Like" at a Tin Huey show . Butler had to coax her to New York with his last $50 for a bus ticket when he secured a record deal with ZE Records . Major Hits The band produced two significant songs: "I Know What Boys Like" reached #62 on the Hot 100 "Christmas Wrapping" became their enduring holiday classic, despite Butler's initial hatred of Christmas The Band's Journey The Waitresses released their debut album "Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful" in 1982, reaching #41 on the charts. They also recorded the theme song for the TV show "Square Pegs" starring Sarah Jessica Parker Internal Struggles Donahue, despite her talented performances, struggled with personal demons.
