We are all walking, talking sets of belief systems, but WHY do we believe what we believe? There are so many different things to believe in, yet we all tend to think our beliefs are "right" - but are they? With her photo series, Dutch photographer Maud Fernhout challenges the viewer to ask themselves these questions. Through self-reflection, she argues, we can learn to appreciate the subjectivity of our own beliefs AND that of others', and in doing so reduce (potentially harmful) effects of bias and stereotyping. More information on http://www.tedxvienna.at Maud Fernhout is a 22-year-old Dutch photographer and artist with a background in psychology and anthropology (University College Utrecht). She often uses this social sciences background to inform her work, which aims to challenge or critique societal norms and values. An example of such work is the "What 'Real' Men Cry Like" series, challenging the gendered stereotype that men don't and/or shouldn't show excessive emotion. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
