Cousin Jack

Almost a quarter million Cornish went overseas between 1850 and 1900 to the new mining frontiers of North and South America, Australia and South Africa. The hard-working Cornishmen became known as Cousin Jacks. My great-grandfather, Henry Ellis, came to the Ballarat goldfields in 1853 from St Just in Penwith. During the Brandy Creek gold rush in Tasmania in 1869, Henry and his fellow cousin Jacks founded Beaconsfield. He is buried at the Cemetery with his wife Cordelia and son William. I learnt this song by Steve Knightly and the Show Hands for a festival I'm performing at in Creswick in Victoria, where Henry's mother, Cordelia, is buried.
