Australian soprano, Joan Sutherland, had performed the three roles in Offenbach's TALES OF HOFFMANN individually during her early years at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. She first performed Antonia on November 17th 1954. Giulietta followed soon after on February 28th 1955 (on tour in Glasgow) and Olympia came on June 19th 1955. It was not until November 12th, 1970, with Seattle Opera, that she sang all three roles on the one night - when she also added the previously non-singing role of Stella making it a vocal quartet. Another major achievement that night was the performance of the excellent American bass-baritone, Joshua Hecht. He replaced the scheduled Norman Triegle learning all four roles at very short notice. Hecht was also Sutherland's colleague in Seatte when she debuted the role of Lakmé in 1967. They are heard here at the premiere performance in the Antonia Act trio "Tu ne chanteras plus?" The mother's voice is sung by French-Canadian mezzo-soprano, Huguette Tourangeau. The performance is conducted by Richard Bonynge.
