Subir Sachdev: From the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model to a universal theory of strange metals

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model provides a solvable theory of entangled many-particle quantum states without quasiparticle excitations in $zero$ spatial dimensions. Insights from the SYK model have to led a universal theory of quantum phase transitions in metals in $two$ spatial dimensions in the presence of impurity-induced disorder. This theory successfully describes the strange metal state observed in numerous correlated electron compounds, including the copper-oxide based high temperature superconductors. I will also mention the surprising connection between the SYK model and the quantum theory of black holes, which has led to the determination of the universal structure of the low energy density of states of charged black holes.
