It is used in many different baking and other recipes, which often gives the dish a sweet and tart taste, such as rhubarb pie. However, this vegetable does way more than just add sweetness to our recipes, and actually helps to promote our overall health a number of unique and important ways. Lets discuss some of the great health benefits of rhubarb. 1. First, rhubarb is packed with a number of important vitamins, minerals and other nutrients for our bodies. Raw rhubarb is an excellent source of vitamin K and manganese, and is also high in other important nutrients such as calcium, potassium, vitamin C and magnesium to name a few. Rhubarb is also an excellent source of dietary fibre, with one cup containing about 2.5 grams of fibre while also containing many healthy antioxidant compounds, such as quercetin. 2. Consuming rhubarb can also help to ease digestion and improve the overall health of the digestive tract. This is largely attributed to the high levels of dietary fibre which it contains. Studies have found that consuming rhubarb regularly can not only help to reduce abdominal discomfort and bloating, but can also help to promote the functioning of our digestive system and improve the digestion process. This can improve nutrient uptake from the healthy foods we eat as well as improve regularity. 3. Surprising to some, but regular consumption of rhubarb may also help to improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of developing certain brain disorders. As some studies have shown, consuming rhubarb can help to reduce inflammation in the brain and the damage caused by it. This allows rhubarb to help protect against damaging oxidative stress and help reduce the risk of unwanted cognitive and brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. Always discuss with your medical practitioner for further treatment and prevention methods in this regard. 4. As previously mentioned, rhubarb is an excellent source of vitamin K. This helps rhubarb to help strengthen our bones and prevent unwanted bone disorders. The high levels of vitamin K found in this vegetable can improve bone metabolism and even help protect against osteoporosis. As well, vitamin K and the many other nutrients found in rhubarb can help to strengthen our bones. Specifically, studies have shown that vitamin K can increase bone mineral density while also decreasing the risk of fractures from occurring. 5. Want to reduce inflammation throughout your entire body? Then consuming rhubarb regularly can certainly help in this regard. This vegetable has long been used for its inflammation reducing properties and is a well known anti-inflammatory food. Due to its many powerful and potent antioxidants, rhubarb can help to eliminate damaging free radicals in the body that could lead to disease. As well, as previously mentioned, rhubarb can help to reduce the risk of oxidative stress while also improving the look of our skin. 6. Lastly, consuming rhubarb regularly can also help to promote weight loss and proper weight management. This is because this vegetable is very low in calories, with a 100 gram serving containing only about 21 calories. Even though it is low in calories, it is packed with nutrition, which is important for anyone who is dieting and reducing their overall calories intake. The high levels of fibre found in rhubarb can also help us to feel more full and prevent snacking during the day and overrating.
