#yosemite #nationalpark #fieldtrip #ngscienc https://ngscience.com Get together with your friends and come on an amazing field trip to one the greatest National Parks in America – Yosemite. Located in central California, Yosemite National Park was established in 1890 making it the third oldest national park in America. The area was given national park status as a way to protect the ecologically diverse environment, its spectacular land forms and breathtaking waterfalls. There are about 7,000 different plant species in California and about half of those can be found right here! Not to mention the more the 400 different vertebrates and thousands of invertebrates. The park stretches for 3,074 square kilometers which is about 1,187 square miles. Central to the park is Yosemite Valley that has been carved out of the surrounding mountains by the movement of glaciers over thousands of years. The amazing plant diversity in Yosemite National Park is due largely to the large changes in elevation. At the lowest parts of the park - at about 650 meters - you'll find a variety of scattered trees, shrubs and grasses. During spring, these lower grasslands come to life as wildflowers bloom. Amazing. As you get higher in the park, the vegetation changes. At the floor of Yosemite Valley - around 1,200 meters, are lower montane forests. It's here that you'll the find the true giants of the plant world - giant sequoias. They're the tallest plants in the world. The tallest of them all, Hyperion, was discovered in 2006 with a height of 115.7 meters, thats a whopping 379.7 feet! Above the Yosemite Valley floor are montane forests that are home to a variety of evergreens like pines and furs. Beyond the treeline, at the highest peaks of the national park are alpine tundras. At this elevation, you wont find any trees. There's mostly dwarf shubs and grasses. Yosemite National Park is known around the world for its myriad of waterfalls and streams, crystal clear lakes and fascinating landforms. The two most well-known landforms are half dome wth a height of around 1,500 meters and El Capitan with a heigh of around 1,100 meters. With such amazing natural beauty, it's no surprise that so many animals have chosen here as a place to live. There's 90 different species of mammals including black bears, bighorn sheep, red foxes and mountain lions. There's more than 260 different species of birds. You'll find dippers, chickadees, woodpeckers and a variety of owls. There's about 22 different reptiles in the park including turtles, lizards , and snakes. There also a few amphibians like salamanders, newts and a variety of frogs. Trout are common in Yosemite's freshwater sources you'll find a great diversity in insects of all shapes and sizes filling the parks meadows and living amongst its giants! Well, that was truly stunning! I think for tonight, I'll call this place home too!
