Hip hop was in its ascendancy and Prince had kinda tarnished his biggest and most celebrated achievement. The Purple rain sequel happened in 1990 and no one was loving it. Prince had to recalibrate. This meant a new sound, a renamed band, and a funky b boy image. underneath it all it was Prince, but it would take getting used to. Tony M took the most damaging hits but Prince's comfort zone was challenged. Warner Bros asked him to attend the Jack the rapper conference. he complied. His new Chief executive asked him to write a more adult contemporary album, he did it. The result was his biggest commercial hit since Purple rain. But seriously, Diamonds and Pearls came together during a weird time – for Prince, and for music in general. After his critical stumble on Graffiti Bridge, Prince was in need of a hit. "He was the greatest live performer alive, right up there with [Mick] Jagger," former co-manager Randy Phillips later told Rolling Stone. "But as far as recording new material, he was in an odd creative space. It's almost as if he lost his mojo for songwriting." More than that, however, Prince seemed to have finally recognized that the culture had shifted: Hip hop and an R&B variant dubbed New Jack Swing were the dominant sounds of the day. The multi-platinum Diamonds and Pearls, released on Oct. 1, 1991, leveraged that zeitgeist to put Prince back on top again.
