CBD usage in veterinary medicine is becoming a more popular option for pets suffering from painful osteoarthritis, seizures, and anxiety. In this episode of VerticalVet’s Vet Med School, we are joined by one of our preferred partners, ElleVet, to discuss what you need to know before recommending CBD products to your patients. Dr. Joe Wakshlag, Chief Veterinary Medical Officer for Ellevet and professor at Cornell University, joins VerticalVet’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Ernie Ward, in a conversation about the current legalities, indications, and quality assurance of veterinary hemp-derived CBD supplements. Some of the topics we discuss include: CBD and CBDA absorption and differences across species. CBD-rich hemp use across indications such as OA, atopic dermatitis, and seizures in dogs. CBD-rich hemp dosing in anxiety may be different. Differences in pharmacokinetics across species. Quality control of hemp in the veterinary supplement industry. About our guest: Dr. Joseph Wakshlag is a Professor at Cornell University and CVMO Ellevet Sciences. Dr. Wakshlag is a graduate of Cornell University with both his DVM, Ph.D., and residency training. He has been teaching nutrition for 20 years at Cornell University and has been leading the field of CBD/CBDA-rich hemp use in veterinary medicine. He has over 15 publications in this arena, studying cross-species pharmacokinetics and efficacy for ailments related to mobility, skin health, and neurological support.
