Gran Senda de Málaga Stage 27 Benalauría to Genalguacil

A truly beautiful hike - a good challenge too, as the villages of the lower Genal Valley lie on both sides of the Genal River and at a similar height, and are connected by ancient pathways that cross the network of streams, plus the Genal River itself. The route heads mainly south as far as El Prado de la Escribana - where we extended the route slightly to enjoy a boskit break at the picnic area there, before climbing east in the last stretch to the Stage's end - Venta Las Cruces, on the outskirts of Genalguacil village. The landscape is entirely forested, with a variety of dominant tree species, in particular Cork oaks and Maritime pines on the sunnier slopes, and Gall oaks and some Chestnut trees in the more shaded areas. The multi-species gallery forest plays an important role at the bottom of a very narrow and steep sided V-shaped valley, with underlying schist and slate. The wooden steps and metal walkways of the Genal River were a highlight of the day, whilst being surrounded by yellow-leafed Poplars. The colour of the leaves, with the blue sky as a backdrop, was incredible! We hiked within 4 municipalities: Benalauria, Algatocin, Jubrique and Genalguacil.
