Kenya: First Malaria vaccination results in 2023

The world’s first malaria vaccine is saving lives. Nearly 1.5 million children have been reached with the RTS,S/AS01 (RTS,S) malaria vaccine through ongoing pilot introductions in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi since 2019. Where the vaccine has been implemented, there is a substantial decrease in deadly severe malaria – a drop in hospitalizations and reduction in child deaths. Four years on, the pilots continue to prevent malaria in children and demonstrate the high demand for the vaccine. At least 28 countries in Africa have expressed interest in introducing the vaccine, with phased introductions in additional countries expected in early 2024. It is critically important to deliver the malaria vaccine to children at risk: WHO, Gavi, UNICEF and other partners are working to increase supply as rapidly as possible to protect more vulnerable children and save more lives.
