*DUCK HARBOR MOUNTAIN TRAIL Video Guide* Rugged Trail - Hand Climbing - Raw Adventure on Acadia's OTHER ISLAND - Isle as Haut access only by ferry - THE MAIL BOAT - Stonington, ME on Deer Isle Isle au Haut trails are unlike manicured ones on Mount Desert Island or even Schoodic Peninsula, even the granite is rougher. This trail rivals any other in Acadia for difficulty & challenge. Where iron rungs & ladders would be expected, none appear. W/less than 100 year round residents & 6-7000 annual visitors, misstep or injury could at least cause enough delay to miss the boat back to Stonington - lost, injured & hoping to be found begin worst case scenarios. Watch the time, have a planned route & inform people of it TO BE SAFE - many trails are not hiked daily & only 2 Park Rangers staff IaH. If a picture is worth 1000 words...what's a video worth? *KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE TRAIL* see the Terrain, Trailheads, Views, and Intersecting Trails... NATURE!!! LIKE or SUBSCRIBE - I'd like for you to do either, I'd LOVE for you to do both! DUCK HARBOR MOUNTAIN TRAIL begins on Western Head Road, a rugged road to Western Head & "easy return" option. Entering the forest, early rough granite & roots foreshadow challenges & more rugged terrain ahead. The trail arrives at a granite jut to climb up onto a 1st ridge. Ridgeline ocean views yield to a forest ascent up over roots emerging on a 2nd ridge w/some rugged inclines that ends with a STEEP downclimb, the 1st of which that would be safer w/iron rungs or ladders, but IT IS NOT that part of Acadia, AND CHALLENGES ARE GOOD! A similarly STEEP climb immediately rises to the 310' summit & a view of Penobscot Bay from the USCGS marker. The ridge has 2 moderate downclimbs & 2 steep ones before arriving at a brief section of forest that yields to a 3rd ridge. Here, 2 STEEP DOWNCLIMBS & a steep granite down & up precede a forest path respite. The forest walk ends at a STEEP JUT requiring hand climbing. Since what goes up must come down, an unsettling downclimb follows down to a jut that climbs to the 4th & final ridge. A steep slab, best slid down & a climb lead to a final long slab down to the path ending this trail at Squeaker Cove. I hope my efforts make your watching experience AND your next visit to ACADIA NATIONAL PARK... wicked awesome! UNSOLICITED ADVICE: "Greenlaw's RV Park and Campground" is a ~10 min drive to The Mail Boat's Stonington ME dock. It's the only campground on Deer Isle & great for Isle au Haut adventures! FRIENDLY REMINDER: no matter the difficulty, hiking has risks... HAVE A PLAN... the best times are had when planned properly. Alternate, shorter routes than what you intend to hike are abundant in Acadia... your hiking plan can include them as contingencies. Injuries can happen, let others know your planned route and timeframe... cell service is spotty in Acadia National Park. Remember: know your limits so you can push them, and DEFINITELY REMEMBER: what goes up must come down which includes you... AND if you enjoy the tour, your guide does accept likes, subscriptions and comments... (an option of leaving a tip: ie a link for actual tips through patreon is likely coming soonish). Be Safe! Live your purpose, change your world... Share your knowledge, change the world...
