Byzantine Successor State? | The Despotate of Epirus (Part I)

Following the Fourth Crusade and Sack of Constantinople in 1204, the Byzantine Empire collapsed. It’s vast territories spanning southeast Europe and the eastern Mediterranean were, thereafter, partitioned among a number of successor states, including the Latin Empire, Nicaea, Trebizond. A certain Michael Komnenos Angelos Doukas would, likewise, take advantage of the chaos, gaining control over a territory, in what is now Albania and Greece, later known as the Despotate of Epirus. He and his successors were able to successfully challenge surrounding regional powers - such as the Republic of Venice, the Second Bulgarian Empire, Serbia, and the previously mentioned Latin Empire - and later even briefly proclaimed themselves as Emperors. The Despotate, however, which for a period was also known as the Empire of Thessalonica, when seemingly on the verge of recapturing Constantinople and actually restoring the Byzantine Empire faced a crushing defeat at the Battle of Klokotnitsa.
