Let’s explore some of the common issues that Farsi speakers face when speaking English. Even if you aren’t a Farsi speaker, you can still learn from this video! Farsi is a syllable-timed language – a language in which syllables generally take up about the same amount of time to pronounce. English is a stress-timed language – a language in which unstressed syllables shorten to fit in with stressed syllables. The result is that Farsi speakers sometimes use a different sentence rhythms when talking in English. Here are a couple ways to deal with this problem. The first is to imagine that you are a drummer. You can tap a desk or table with your fingers or a pencil. Or you can clap your hands. Try tapping or clapping only on the stressed syllables. Here’s an example. Imagine you are learning a new vocabulary word such as photography. /fəˈtɑːgrəfi/ Try tapping where the stress is, like this /fəˈtɑːgrəfi/ Then try a new word. Perhaps it is one that is closely related to the first one. /ˌfoʊtəˈgræfɪk/ Let’s end this video with a quiz. Can you tell where I place stress in the following word? pronunciation /prəˌnʌnsiˈeɪʃən/ Originally published at - https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a...
