SERMON “Arise and Shine!” (Isaiah 60:1–3) Series: Arise and Shine: Living the Word in a Dark World – 1 of 3 A. Introduction After a long night of storms, the first rays of dawn break through the clouds and the world glows with new light. That moment—when darkness gives way to day—is what God desires to do in His people. Isaiah 60:1–3 is a call to awaken from discouragement and reflect the glory of the Lord in a dark and confused world. B. Scripture Reading (Isaiah 60:1–3 ESV) “1 Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. 2 For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you. 3 And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.” C. Context Isaiah ministered to Judah during a time of spiritual decay and coming exile, declaring that salvation belongs to the LORD. The book moves from judgment (chs. 1–39) to comfort (chs. 40–55) to glory (chs. 56–66). Chapter 60 marks the turning point from despair to restoration—when the Redeemer returns to Zion and God’s glory rises upon His people, pointing ultimately to Christ, the Light of the world D. Walking Through the Main Text 1) The Dawn of God’s Glory (v. 1) — God commands His people to rise from discouragement and reflect His glory because the Light has already come. Christ, the true Light, dwells within believers, calling us to live in His victory. (John 1:9; 2 Cor. 3:18) 2) Light in the Darkness (v. 2) — Though darkness covers the earth, the LORD Himself rises upon His people. The deeper the world’s darkness, the brighter God’s glory shines through His Church. (Isa. 9:2; John 1:5) 3) Shining for the Nations (v. 3) — God’s glory in His people draws others to Himself. The light we carry is not for comfort alone but for mission—so the nations may see and come to Christ. (Matt. 5:14–16; Rev. 21:23–24) E. Conclusion As the storm clouds part and morning light fills the sky, Isaiah’s call still rings out: “Arise, shine, for your light has come.” The light has already dawned in Jesus Christ, and His Spirit shines through His people today. How do we respond? Rise in Repentance — Turn from sin, pride, or apathy. Repentance clears the clouds that hide God’s glory. Shine in Obedience — Live what you believe. Walk daily in the light of God’s Word and prayer. Reflect God’s Glory in Relationships — Show mercy, truth, and forgiveness where the world shows anger and revenge. Reach Out to Those Still in Darkness — Share Christ, invite others to worship, and pray for the lost by name. Renew Your Commitment to the Church — Be present, serve faithfully, give joyfully, and pray for revival until this hill glows with the light of Christ. The same God who said, “Let there be light,” now says to His Church, “Arise and shine.” The light has come—the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.
