Played only in and around the village of Pamulihan in Sumedang, West Java, kacapi celempungan is a Sundanese ensemble form which takes its name from two of its key instruments: kacapi, a twenty string box zither, and celempung kayu, a modern wooden version of the bamboo tube zither which subs for the kendang drum. Also featuring are violin (biola or piul), kecrek (metal percussion) and vocals from a rotating cast of sinden (singers.) Pak Tatang, the dancer in the leather jacket, claims to be the inventor of the unique celempung kayu. Inspired by the bamboo tube zither called celempung (see our latest video with Mang Jama demonstrating!), the celempung kayu is a wooden octagonal prism with two metal "strings" linked by a bamboo bridge. Beating the bridge and body of the instrument with a soft mallet, a skilled musician can uncannily replicate the rubbery, bass-heavy sound of the kendang drum which lends Sundanese music its dynamism (headphones or decent speakers necessary to hear anything at all - this is bassy stuff!) Here, Pak Tatang's group Lingkung Seni Kacapi Celempungan Panineungan play a medley featuring "lagu buhun" - an ancient piece taken from tarawangsa, sacred ritual music also common to the area.
