Verdict: Slow but roomy, the Kia Sportage offers a compelling set of standard features at a price that falls short of most of its competitors, and it also has that outgoing look, if that’s what you’re interested in. Overview Compact crossover SUVs are popular for their combination of versatility and space with a touch of style, but performance isn’t a priority. So it’s no surprise that the Kia Sportage offers a generous list of standard equipment and a compelling set of options, versatility and space at a reasonable starting price. The two-row Sportage’s reasonable pricing comes with a caveat: Its 187-horsepower four-cylinder engine doesn’t deliver anywhere near the thrust found in the more expensive Sportage Hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which we reviewed separately. Front-wheel drive is standard. All-wheel drive is available on all trim levels except the SX and is standard on the upper trim levels. The Sportage’s pricing compares favorably with rivals such as the Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V. Redesigned for 2023, the Sportage shares many of its underpinnings with its corporate cousin, the Hyundai Tucson, including its vehicle architecture, powertrain and overall size. But the Sportage looks more fashion-forward than its more traditionally styled sibling.
