🧙♂️ Walking the Real Landscape Behind Tolkien’s Shire This quiet corner of the Ribble Valley helped shape one of the world’s most enduring fictional worlds. In this walk, I follow the Tolkien Trail — a 6.5-mile route linking rivers, farmland, historic estates, and centuries of learning — through a landscape once walked by J. R. R. Tolkien while visiting Stonyhurst College. Passing the River Hodder and the River Ribble, with views towards Pendle Hill, this is a settled, pastoral landscape shaped by faith, farming, and quiet continuity — the kind of place that echoes the spirit of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien stayed nearby during the Second World War, returning often to this area for its calm order and familiarity. With hedged fields, wooded lanes, river valleys, and even the old Shireburn name still present in the landscape, it’s not hard to see why this part of Lancashire became linked with the Shire. Along the way, we explore: • The historic village of Hurst Green • Cromwell’s Bridge and its Civil War legends • The long-distance Ribble Way • The meeting of three rivers — Ribble, Hodder, and Calder • Landscapes still influenced by the Duchy of Lancaster This isn’t a film set. It’s a real English landscape — one that quietly helped bring Middle-earth into being. If you enjoy thoughtful walking, literary landscapes, and routes rich in history, I think you’ll enjoy this one. 🥾 ROUTE HIGHLIGHTS • Tolkien Trail circular walk • Stonyhurst College & observatories • Rivers Ribble, Hodder & Calder • Cromwell’s Bridge (1562) • Ribble Way section • Views to Pendle Hill • Pastoral Lancashire countryside 📍 Distance: approx. 6.5 miles 📍 Location: Hurst Green & Stonyhurst Estate, Ribble Valley, Lancashire 👉 ENJOYED THE WALK?
