On May 5, 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa, American forces were ordered to retreat from Hacksaw Ridge. Seventy-five wounded soldiers were left behind. One man refused to leave. Corporal Desmond Doss, a medic who would not carry a weapon because of his faith, stayed alone on top of the escarpment. Surrounded by Japanese forces and under constant machine gun and mortar fire, he began lowering wounded soldiers down a 400-foot cliff using a rope system he improvised on the battlefield. For five hours, he worked alone. By nightfall, seventy-five men had been saved. Doss became the first conscientious objector in American history to receive the Medal of Honor. But his story didn’t end on the ridge. This is the true story of faith under fire, and the man who proved that courage doesn’t require a weapon. #ww2 #worldwar2 #desmonddoss
