BIEN HOA, VIETNAM ― This 10-year-old boy has been as muscular as an adult bodybuilder since he was a toddler. Nguyen Hoang Nam hails from Vietnam and has become a bit of a celebrity after photos of his unusually muscular body went viral on social media. Hoang Nam's parents say their son's body has always been much more muscular than other children his age. However, he didn’t get these muscles from dieting or extreme muscle training. They are the result of a rare genetic muscle condition. His godmother, Kim Uyen, told local media outlet Sao Star that doctors already noticed on the day Hoang Nam was born that his muscles were strangely over-developed. When Hoang Nam was 6 years old, his muscles started to develop even more. Fearing that the condition could impact his health, his parents took him to the Children's Hospital in Ho Chi Minh city. After undergoing several tests, the doctor said that Hoang Nam had hypertrophy, or “Superman Syndrome”, which made his muscles bigger than other people’s. According to the doctor who examined Hoang Nam, this condition is quite rare and there are only a few cases in the world. However, it turned out that the doctor's statement, as quoted in the Vietnamese media outlet’s article, is not quite accurate. Superman Syndrome is actually NOT a muscle-enlarging disorder, but only refers to boys born with an extra Y chromosome, which has nothing to do with the premature muscularity of Hoang Nam’s condition. It turns out that Hoang Nam’s condition is called Myostatin-Related Muscle Hypertrophy, a very rare condition characterized by reduced body fat and increased muscle size, according to the National Library of Medicine. This syndrome is not known to cause any medical problems, and the affected individuals are intellectually normal. Although the condition did not affect his health, Hoang Nam's parents said that the condition made him suffer from muscle stiffness and lack of flexibility. That's why, even though Hoang Nam showed interest in bodybuilding and weight training, his parents suggested that he learns karate or yoga, to reduce muscle stiffness. Despite having a “stronger” appearance than his peers, Hoang Nam is still a normal 10-year-old boy. Sometimes local social-media influencers would invite him to collaborate and gain publicity on their platforms. However, his parents reject these offers, fearing that public attention would be bad for their son’s development. Hoang Nam also once caught the attention of a bodybuilder at a school for talented youngsters in Dong Nai, who was willing to train him for free. So, he moved to Dong Nai to train at the school with his brothers and sisters. But, maybe because he was too young he felt homesick, so he returned home after 3 months for the sake of his psychological stability. Today Hoang Nam is back with his family and lives his life like a normal ten-year-old. Stay healthy, Hoang Nam!
