Though it is inspired by the visionary works of both David Bowie and David Lynch, the holiday serves as an artistic playground where individuals are encouraged to embrace their own eccentricities, challenge conventions, and manifest new artistic expressions. This period is not bound by time or space but pragmatically shall commence in the new year, during the month of January, beginning on David Bowie’s birthday and concluding on David Lynch’s birthday. With the death of David Lynch, a new cosmic synchronicity has been unlocked between these two pillars of film, art, and music. Both Bowie and Lynch share a fascination with dreams, identity, and transformation, albeit from different angles: • Bowie sought to become the dream through theatrical reinvention and musical narratives. • Lynch explored the essence of dreams, delving into their mysteries and strangeness. The collective creative energy that defines Bowie’s boundary-pushing musical and cultural legacy, and Lynch's exploration of the unconscious mind and the strange beauty in the ordinary, can continue to be amplified through all of us who have been touched and inspired by their art. Just as Bowie’s music reshaped popular culture and Lynch’s films peeled back the layers of ordinary life, the holiday encourages exploration beyond what we know and channel it into whatever it is we are doing artistically. • Reflect, Transform, and Recreate: Engage in personal transformations or artistic projects that break free from the mundane. Whether through visual art, film, music, or performance, create something that transports you (and others) into new, evocative spaces. Customs & Traditions: • Noncommercial: Spiritual profit from the creation of art should be prioritized over the financial profit of art. Art and commerce naturally intersect in a variety of ways. If there is a way to profit from the art you create, that is wonderful. However, the aim should be to focus on creation for the sake of creation—to practice a focus on the journey and not the destination. • No Boundaries: No rules to art. Whatever you want to create, you shall. All forms of artistic and creative expression are welcomed. You can finish a project you have been working on all year, or you can start a project that you will work on until whenever it is complete. • Meditation: Both David Lynch and David Bowie were practitioners of various types of meditation. Leading up to and during the festival, participants should attempt to fold some sort of meditation practice into their day. • The Reveal: On January 20th, you may reveal your art to the world in some way, small or large—online or in real life. The reveal, however, is not important—as the destination is not as important as the journey or any transformation you undertake in the process. Manifesto of the Community: • Revel in Nonconformity: Just as Bowie reinvented himself across time and genre, and Lynch flipped the conventions of narrative storytelling, participants are encouraged to express their most creative, authentic selves, unbound by societal rules. • Challenge Perception: Like the art of Lynch, the holiday calls for a reimagining of what’s possible, with a focus on unexpected connections, contrasts, and contradictions. • Transform the Ordinary: The everyday is a canvas. Whether through visual arts, music, or performance, we transform the mundane into something extraordinary, with the goal of revealing deeper truths about our world and ourselves. • Foster Connection: The holiday is not just about individual expression but also about coming together as a community of artists, dreamers, and visionaries, celebrating the power of creativity to bridge gaps, dissolve boundaries, and spark transformation.
