Tobacco leaves are picked and cleaned in preparation for curing. Colour-curing is the process where chlorophyll in the leaves are broken down, changing the leaf colour from green to brown. Moisture is also released from the leaves, and managing the humidity is important. Too much humidity leads to mold forming, and too little can cause the leaf to dry out without changing colour, leading to a leaf that is unsuitable for fermentation. Commercial farmers hang leaves in curing barns where the humidity can be managed, but for small growers like myself a different method is needed. The leaves are layered between sheets of newspaper and the stack is loosely wrapped with plastic (a bin-liner is perfect). The newspaper is changed once or twice per day, depending on the amount of moisture being released by the leaves, and the process is complete when the leaves are completely brown and the mid-rib vein has released the last bit of moisture. I treat the leaves with vinegar to kill any remaining mold, and the leaves go into storage. The next phase in the process will be fermentation, to be covered in a future video.
