To help the Crampe Ashi Day, composer Performed live by Choral Arts Initiative. Brandon Elliott, Artistic Director. Conducted by Connor Scott SATB a cappella choir (with optional bass divisi) Text: The Book of Magical Charms "To help the Crampe. Take a piece of Parchemint as much as will goe about your legg in the gartering place; write theron theis folowing words Gut + Gut + Egut + Getaut + and weare it next your bare leg. It will help. " This text is taking from the "Book of Magical Charms," a 17th-Century compilation of various types of witchcraft and sorcery. The song sets a particular spell labeled, "To help the Crampe." While the exact source of this text is unknown, it may come from the tradition of wise women or cunning folk, who were peasant healers in Early Modern Europe. If so, the text possibly preserves a way women were helping women during a time period in which women were also heavily persecuted--the time of witch panics. The setting is meant to imagine what it might feel like to visit such a healer. Special thanks to Ian Pomerantz for transcribing and producing a pronunciation guide for the piece, as well as for providing insight into a possible translation of the non-English text. "Gut + Gut + Egut + Getaut +" may come from early modern German and could mean something like, "well, well, and very well thawed."
