The U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory is a global leader in pioneering scientific and engineering breakthroughs. Established in the wake of the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction, Argonne has a legacy of innovation in nuclear energy that spans more than 80 years. The lab has played a central role in advancing nuclear reactor design, fuel cycle technologies, and nuclear safeguards, making it a cornerstone of America’s clean energy and national security strategies. Today, the nuclear energy sector faces growing challenges. Used fuel management, reactor safety, cost efficiency, and long-term sustainability remain key hurdles. Additionally, the need for enhanced nuclear safeguards and international monitoring is becoming more urgent as advanced reactor designs emerge. Meeting these challenges requires a comprehensive, forward-looking approach that brings together innovation in materials, modeling, and policy. In this video, experts at Argonne highlight a suite of innovations to strengthen the future of nuclear energy. These include secure used fuel recycling strategies that reduce nuclear waste and support advanced reactor development. Artificial intelligence tools developed at Argonne could save the industry over $500 million annually by improving efficiency and predictive maintenance. World-class facilities like the Aurora exascale supercomputer and the Advanced Photon Source enable high-resolution modeling and materials analysis to inform safer, more efficient designs. Argonne is also embedding “security-by-design” into next-generation nuclear systems and playing a leadership role in global nonproliferation and safeguards. Together, these advances reinforce Argonne’s commitment to energy innovation, environmental stewardship, and international security.
