Puppies affected by the disease typically show signs from 4-6 weeks of age. These include a bunny hopping gait, a crouching, wide-based stance and abnormal spinal reflexes with proprioceptive defects in the hindlimb. These clinical signs do not progress in severity with age. Other signs have been reported such as kinked tails, curvature and malformation of the spine and abnormal hair growth along the spine. Diagnostics include radiography, pyelogram and cerebrospinal fluid analysis. Other causes of spinal dysraphism, include infection, trauma and tumours affecting the spinal cord. Neural tube defects have been described in other dog breeds, such as the Dalmatian, Rottweiler, West Highland White Terrier, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, and Alaskan Malamute, but the causative mutation has been identified only in the Weimaraner.
