(6 Sep 1997) English/Nat Hundreds of people are camped outside the gates of the Spencer family home at Althorp Park in Northamptonshire which marks the end of the funeral of Princess Diana. After the funeral ceremony in London, the cortege will travel North to the village of Harleston Althorp, passing through the gates of the family home on Saturday afternoon. Princess Diana will be buried in the privacy of the grounds of the family estate. Dawn broke over Althorp, to find mourners gathered at the entrance to the Spencer family's estate. Many have travelled here instead of London, to join the Princess on her final journey before she is laid to rest in the grounds of her family's estate, Althorp Park. People continue to bring flowers to the entrance of Althorp Park. Many have turned up at short notice, almost compelled to come. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I needed to pay my last respects to Diana, she was one of kind, she'll never be replaced. That's the main reason." SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop SOUNDBITE: (English) "Last night, I just decided I've got to go. I just got in my car, got my stuff together and came. It makes you feel that you come to terms with it better, just with being here. Everybody's feeling the same and you can all share that feeling together. SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop A rapport has built up between the people camped outside and the local police. UPSOUND: (English) "Oh marvelous that's fantastic." "There's no sugar." But the police will have to clear them away to allow the funeral cortege to pass when it arrives from London this afternoon. SOUNDBITE: (English) "There's still a clear message that if you can watch it on television or listen to it on the radio then do so but if you do feel as though you do need to actually visit the route to pay your last respects to Diana, Princess of Wales, then please react with dignity and with respect and more importantly still respect the wishes of the family and stay away from Althorp Estate." SUPER CAPTION: Superintendent Phil Vickers - Local police chief The plans to bury Princess Diana along with 20 generations of Spencers had to be abandoned. The extraordinary display of grief at her death has made it clear that her final resting place will become a place of pilgrimage. The tiny hamlet of Great Brington could not cope with such an influx and so the decision was made to bury the Princess in the privacy of her own home. For the same reason, the local priest, who was to officiate at the ceremony will no longer perform the ceremony in Great Brington church. He had a message for all those coming to the village. SOUNDBITE: (English) "During the very public events of today, I would ask you to remember that at the centre of them are grieving families. Please give them space to mourn in their own way." SUPER CAPTION: David MacPherson, priest of Great Brington church Those who knew Diana before she became a public figure can hardly believe this icon is the same person. Betty Andrews was Diana's housekeeper before she married Prince Charles. She says she won't be going to the funeral. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I know it would have been a privilege to go but I think I shall be better in my own home, thinking and watching it on television. I can grieve quietly here, rather than in a crowd." SUPER CAPTION: Betty Andrews -former housekeeper of Princess Diana Within the grounds of Althorp Park the Princess will finally find the privacy which, in life, she so desperately wanted.
