GARNET, by HA Vandercook (pub. Rubank, 1938) is one of his gem-stoned titled pieces and is a great trombone solo. It is a little challenging, which means it should be accessible to most 3rd and 4th year players. That said, there is no reason a young trombonist can’t learn to play it musically!!! This video has two sections. The first is a performance of the piece with the accompaniment CD. There are no cues on the recording, so if you decide to perform with it, it will take repeated listenings to get comfortable with the starts and stops. (When you watch my performance, you’ll notice I’m not always perfectly in sync with it- but I’m trying lol!!!) The second section is a tutorial where I talk about the piece and, more specifically, my use of alternate positions to make it easier and more musical. This gets a little detailed, and only needs to be watched if you’re looking to take your performance to the next level.
