The 2020 decade started with an exciting stage in the growth of Gallium Nitride (GaN) that will change power systems by dramatically decreasing power losses for systems converting electrical energy. In this talk, the operation of GaN power switches for power trains will be presented, discussing the inevitable challenges and significant opportunities of this new technology. VisIC’s GaN technology - D3GaN (Direct Drive D-Mode) - has an order of magnitude lower losses than conventional Silicon and 4.5 times lower than Silicon Carbide (SiC) for the same power level. The economics and availability of GaN manufacturing and comparison with mainstream Silicon devices will be discussed as well.
