Vision Zero Research on the Road Part IV. Training Bus Operators to be the Safest in the World by Alvaro Brandon, Superintendent, Bus Safety & Training, MTA-NYC Transit Department of Buses. Alvaro Brandon, Superintendent for the Bus Safety and Training Unit at the MTA Department of Buses, investigates serious and high-profile collisions involving MTA Transit buses. Mr. Brandon has assisted in refreshing their existing safety classes to address the new challenges on the road while continually developing the skill sets of MTA Bus operators. He started his career with the MTA as a bus operator in 1992. In 2010 he was promoted to dispatcher, where, among his many other duties, he responded to and investigated bus collisions. In 2014 he was transferred to the Bus Safety and Training Center where he conducted undercover observation rides to ensure bus operators complied with safety rules and regulations. In 2016 he was promoted to Superintendent, where he instructed both new and veteran bus operators on safe bus operations. Mr. Brandon is a Certified NYS DMV Article 19A Examiner. He studied Transit Bus System Safety with the Transportation Safety Institute at the U.S. Department of Transportation as well as Accident Investigation, Vehicle Dynamics, and Traffic Crash Reconstruction at Northwestern University Center for Public Safety. He is a member of the National Association of Professional Accident Reconstruction Specialists (NAPARS). In 2013, Mr. Brandon was a crash team member and presenter at the 2013 ARC CSI Crash Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. He currently serves as one of the MTA’s representatives on the Vision Zero 2 Task Force. Alvaro loves travelling around the world, where he has visited, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hainan, Xian, Luoyang, Wuhan, Hong Kong, Macau, Bangkok, Tokyo, Dominican Republic, Acapulco, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Cancun, and Puerto Vallarta. During his travels he visits many large and small bus companies as a means of broadening his knowledge of transportation transit systems and their safety and training operations.
