TURN UNTO THE LORD Zechariah 1:1–6 A Simple Overview of the Book Chapter 1:1–6 — The invitation to repentance Chapters 1:7–6:15 — Eight visions (illumination through visions) Chapters 7–8 — Correcting empty outward religion Chapters 9–14 — Future events leading to the Messianic Kingdom Practically, Zechariah gives promises of the assurance that their temple would be rebuilt, despite the opposition. 1. The TIME of the message Vs. 1 Zechariah and Haggai were both prophets in this post-exile era. The Darius that is mentioned is not the Darius of Daniel. But the Darius, that came some sixteen years after the beginning of the rebuilding of the temple. A remnant of the Jewish people had returned to the land—about fifty thousand—after Cyrus issued the edict allowing them to go back and rebuild the temple. Hag 1:4-8, Isa 44:28 2. The TEACHER God used Vs. 1b The "eighth month of the second year of Darius" actually began about the end of October, 520 B.C. 1) His TESTIMONY — He speaks the Word of the Lord, not his own ideas. the word of the Lord came At that time Prophets spoke to the nation on behalf of God. 2) The TRUTH in his name — Zechariah means “The Lord remembers.” God has not forgotten His people Israel. God has not forgotten His covenants. God has not forgotten His prophetic plan. God has not cast away His people. He has a plan, and He will carry it out exactly as He said. 3. The TROUBLE identified Vs. 2 "The Lord has been very angry with your fathers. The Hebrew literally means "angry with anger," and indicates extreme displeasure. 2 Kings 21:14-16 They simply refused to listen to and obey God, and the consequences: the warnings of Deut. 28: 15-68 had come to pass (see v. 6). 4. The TENDER CALL from the Lord of Hosts Vs. 3 This is the heart of the text. His call is simple: Turn to Me. And His promise is equally clear: I will turn to you. Hosea 6:1,Hosea 14, Joel 2:12–13, Malachi 3:7 Luke 15:17-20 5. The TESTIMONY of the past Vs. 4-5 1) The EXAMPLE they followed — Their fathers were not models of faithfulness. “Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever?” (v.5) 2) The ERROR they repeated — But they did not hear nor heed Me," Judgment came exactly as God said it would. 3) The EXPIRATION of prophetic voices — Vs. 5 "Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever? 6. The TURNING POINT of repentance Vs. 6 1) The WORD of God — “But my words… did they not take hold…?” (v.6) God’s Word is not fragile. God’s Word does not fail. 2) The WILL of God — “Like as the Lord… thought to do unto us…” God is not confused. Just before Peter begins to talk about the “Day of the Lord” and God’s coming judgment he says this, 2 Peter 3:9 This is why repentance is tied to prophecy. When God tells us what is coming, He is not trying to entertain us—He is calling us to return to Him. 3) The WORK of God — “So he has dealt with us.” God’s dealings are faithful and consistent. When people harden their necks, consequences follow. Donate: https://www.givelify.com/givenow/1.0/...
