Great Grey Shrike at Fillingham, Lincolnshire 17.02.26.

A Great Grey Shrike Lanius excubitor seen in a field near the village of Fillingham, Lincolnshire, 17.02.26. The Great Grey Shrike is a song bird but looks like a miniature falcon with its hooked bill for tearing flesh. This Shrike's behaviour is very similar to that of a Kestrel, repeatedly hovering over the field looking for small voles. During my visit the bird caught at least five voles, it then would fly into a hedge to a thorny larder and impale the unfortunate creatures to be consumed later. This small field also proved popular with a local Barn Owl and Kestrel. A Hare also paused momentarily in the grass.
