In spatial analysis, decision-making often requires evaluating multiple factors to determine the most suitable locations for a specific purpose. Multi-Criteria Overlay Analysis (MCOA) is a powerful GIS technique that combines multiple spatial datasets to identify optimal areas based on defined criteria. In this session, we explore the application of Multi-Criteria Overlay Analysis in QGIS to identify suitable areas for development. Our objective is to locate areas that are closer to roads, away from water bodies, and not within protected regions. To achieve this, we utilize various vector datasets, including boundary, roads, water polylines, water polygons, and protected regions. The process involves several key steps such as merging water bodies to create a unified water layer, generating proximity rasters to assess distances from roads and water bodies, applying different criteria to determine suitable areas based on proximity and protection constraints. By doing all these, we successfully identified the most appropriate areas for development. This workflow demonstrates how QGIS can be used to facilitate data-driven decision-making environmental management.
