Thank you :)   / cmrr   Janos Starker, born in Budapest on July 5, 1924, entered the Budapest Academy of Music at the age of seven (an institution he left without graduating) and gave his first public performance in 1933. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed principal cellist of the Budapest Opera. From 1945 to 1946, he held the same position at the Philharmonic Orchestra. He decided to emigrate and went to Vienna with the intention of entering the Geneva competition. In October 1946, he won the bronze medal. Starker preferred to give up a solo career, which the war had already postponed, and went to Paris where he perfected his art and performed regularly with several string quartets. It was in Paris that he worked on the relationship with the instrument, on the physiology of playing, the distribution of muscular strength in the hand and the art of phrasing and ornamenting. He then summarized the essence of his musical thought and transmuted it into his technique. In 1948, Starker emigrated to the United States. He was successively principal cellist of the Dallas Orchestra at the invitation of Antal Dorati, then principal cellist of Fritz Reiner at the Metropolitan Opera of New York (1949-1952), then with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1953-1958). In 1956, he devoted more time to his solo activity and gave his first concert in London, at the Wigmore Hall. Walter Legge immediately noticed him and offered him an exclusive contract with His Master's Voice. It was with Starker that Lege began his most fruitful collaboration as a cellist. From 1957 until 1959, Starker recorded his first complete Bach Suites for His Master's Voice, a set that he recorded five times during his career. During these four years, Lege recorded most of his repertoire with the Hungarian cellist, a legacy of near perfection. This first recording of the Suites is unanimously regarded as one of the best recordings of this booklet. From 1958 onwards, Starker, who had given his leave to Fritz Reiner, turned to teaching, without however renouncing concerts (since the eighties, he has assiduously attended the best auditoriums and the most prestigious musical seasons in the world). He created a cello class at Indiana University, Bloomington, which has become famous. His discography, extremely abundant and scattered on many different labels, counts more than eighty references. It is certainly the most important discographic legacy that a cellist has ever left.
