Jakkoin, widely known as "Owari's Maple Leaf Temple," is a historic mountain sanctuary in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture. Located on Mt. Tsugao within the Hida-Kisogawa Quasi-National Park, it offers a serene escape with significant historical roots and stunning seasonal landscapes. Historical Legacy The temple has a long and storied history, originally founded in 654 AD by the priest Dosho under the order of Emperor Kotoku. It has served as a central place of worship for centuries, focusing on the goddess Senju Kannon (the Thousand-Armed Goddess of Mercy). • Nobunaga’s Connection: The legendary warlord Oda Nobunaga was a frequent visitor to the temple. He designated it as a protector of the "demon gate" for his Kiyosu Castle and reportedly favored the lookout point for its strategic views of the surrounding plains and his own Inuyama Castle. • Architectural Heritage: Several of the temple's structures, including the main hall, are registered as National Cultural Heritage sites. While some buildings were reconstructed in the late 19th century, the site maintains a dignified, ancient atmosphere. • Religious Significance: Along the arduous path to the main hall, visitors pass numerous stone statues, including Jizo (protector of travelers) and the Seven Gods of Fortune, which are intended to help pilgrims become better versions of themselves during their ascent. Location and Geography Situated along the banks of the Kiso River—often called the "Japanese Rhine" for its natural beauty—the temple grounds cover approximately 330,000 square meters. • The Ascent: To reach the main hall, visitors must climb 320 steep stone steps that begin halfway up the mountain. For those who find the stairs difficult, a slow-moving, six-person monorail (slope car) is available for a nominal fee. • Lookout Viewpoint: The observation deck beside the main hall offers panoramic views that stretch across the Nobi Plain. On clear days, you can see Inuyama Castle, Komaki Castle, and Gifu Castle, as well as the distant Suzuka Mountain Range and Mt. Ibuki. • Seasonal Beauty: While most famous for its 1,000 large maple trees that turn brilliant shades of red and gold in autumn (typically peaking in late November), the temple is also prized in spring for its cherry blossoms and "Ao Momiji" (vibrant green maples) during early summer. #Jakkoin #Inuyama #HistoryOfJapan #OdaNobunaga #JapaneseTemple #VisitAichi #MapleLeafTemple #JapanHistory #MountainTemple #HiddenGemJapan #KisoRiver #TravelJapan #Momiji #OwariJakkoin #寂光院 #犬山 #歴史
