Alice Springs Councillor Jacinta Price says the new Closing the Gap target for family violence in indigenous communities could leave “twice as many more kids being left in abusive homes”. The ‘Closing the Gap’ targets have been overhauled to improve health, education, jobs, and incarceration rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Sky News host Andrew Bolt said under the new objectives there is “no target to cut the crime but there is a target to cut the number of people serving a penalty for that crime”. Ms Price said comments made by the Lead Convener of the Coalition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community-Controlled Peak organisations, regarding the creation of more jobs in indigenous organisations, is just “shifting where the welfare exists”. “There’s no targets for economic independence for indigenous Australians … it’s all about more welfare,” Image: News Corp Australia
