ELMER GANTRY: I vaguely remember watching this film as a child and the end scene scared the life out of me, but now I realise that it is a master piece of faith, sin and redemption. The power of God's Word to transform is not in doubt and when the Word is in Gantry's hand God's Spirit overwhelms him and compels him to preach the message . He can even use the most unscrupulous of preachers as this story demonstrated well. The part that sticks well in my mind is when the reporter challenges Sharon Falconer's right to preach. He asks who Ordained them and points out that Jesus had God, others have degrees etc.... He leaves her speechless, because she has no answer and is clearly distressed by the challenge (good acting). Yet, by the end, the viewers are left in no doubt that 'Sharon Falconer' has to have been Ordained by the hand of God Himself. She makes the ultimate sacrifice, choosing God over the chance to have a married life with children and in the end giving over her life, literally. Im not surprised that this film won awards. These many years later is is still and excellent film.
