Tennyson didn't invent the Kraken which appears in Norse legends, but he was responsible for its popularity. Also he convinced the world that there was only one, by adding "The", making it a personified monster. Now no seafaring phantasmagoria can do without The Kraken. "Arms" is sometimes substituted for "fins", perhaps because polypi don't have fins. However they don't have "arms" either and "tentacles" won't fit the metre.
