Who is Joel Turner? Joel Turner is a former SWAT officer, professional archery coach, and founder of Shot IQ. He specializes in mental control for shooting — whether it’s archery, rifles, pistols, or any trigger-based sport. He’s obsessed with fixing target panic, trigger punching, and mental breakdowns during high-pressure shots. What is Shot IQ? Shot IQ is Joel’s entire system designed to: Prevent punching the trigger (rushing the shot). Build a controlled, repeatable shot under stress. Reprogram your brain to focus on a process, not outcome. Eliminate target panic at the source — the subconscious trying to fire the shot. Core Concepts of Shot IQ The Shooting Problem is Mental, NOT Physical. Most bad shots aren't because you can't aim — it’s because you can't control WHEN you fire. You Must Separate Aiming From Shooting. Aiming is automatic and subconscious. Shooting must be 100% conscious, deliberate, and controlled. You Need a "Decision" Before Every Shot. Make a CONSCIOUS DECISION to start the shot activation movement. Say something internally like, “I am going to move slow, and I’m going to watch it.” Use a "Movement-Based" Trigger. Instead of slapping or punching the trigger, you create constant, deliberate movement until the shot surprises you. Accept the Aim. Your sight pin will always move slightly — accept it. Don’t try to “time” the perfect moment. Trust that the pin floats on target while you execute your movement. Motor Programs and Neural Pathways. Joel teaches you how to rewrite your neural pathways so your brain accepts a controlled shot as normal — instead of rushing. Controlled Breathing and Internal Commands. Talk yourself through every shot (“Pull, Pull, Pull…” or “Press, Press, Press…”). Control breathing to stay calm under stress. How Joel Teaches It (His Step-by-Step Process) Draw and Aim: Get your pin on target. Let it float naturally. Make the Decision: Before you start your shot movement, consciously say something like “Here I go.” Start the Movement: Activate your trigger by moving very slowly and deliberately (like pulling through the shot or pressing the trigger). Stay Focused on Movement, NOT Impact. Your only goal = keep the movement going until the shot breaks. Let the Shot Surprise You. You should not know the exact instant it’s going to fire. Self-Diagnose and Evaluate. After every shot, ask: Did I stay in the movement? Did I control the shot? Was the shot a surprise?
