Directed by Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone, Sinister, Doctor Strange), The Black Phone 2 once again stars Ethan Hawke (Training Day, Sinister) as the horrifying Grabber, Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon: Live Action) as Finney, and Madeleine McGraw (The Harbinger, Toy Story 4) as Gwen — who absolutely steals the show this time. She delivers a powerhouse performance that had us both tearing up more than once. The movie feels more psychological than the first, with haunting dream sequences and twisted supernatural imagery that had major Nightmare on Elm Street vibes — and we mean that in the best way. The scares are deeper, the tension more emotional, and the storytelling feels personal and raw. We loved seeing Robin (Miguel Cazarez Mora) still play a part in the story — honoring him adds such heart and continuity to Finney’s journey. The emotional connection between Finney and Gwen anchors the horror, and the way the story expands on the Grabber’s shadowy influence had us completely on edge. From its creepy atmosphere and incredible performances to its surprising emotional depth, The Black Phone 2 proves that great horror can make you scream and cry in the same breath. This movie haunted us in the best way — and we can’t stop thinking about it.
