After 25 years, 100% kills on MEPHISTO.WAD has finally been achieved! Runner: DCG Retrowave Date: 2021-04-12 IWAD: DOOM2.WAD PWAD: MEPHISTO.WAD Category: UV Max Map: 07 Time: 16:25 Engine: DOOM2.EXE v1.9 (Played on my MS-DOS gaming PC :D) Demo File: https://www.doomworld.com/application... While faster UV Max runs do exist, all of them skip the Spectre stuck in the wall since he was considered unkillable. Splash damage couldn't kill him due to his center being stuck inside the wall and there was seemingly no way to shoot him directly. decino recently mentioned on his YouTube channel that you could walk along the thin Icon ledge to hit the Spectre directly from an angle. However, no demos existed at the time when that video was uploaded. decino also pointed out that the player would need to hurry since monsters would keep spawning behind them. This seemed like the only real obstacle and I already had an easy solution thanks to a previous cooperative run. On October 20th, 2020, I played Mephisto for the first time in vanilla with my friend, Retro. At the end, we noticed that the spawn positions were quickly filling up with dozens of stuck monsters. They even started flickering/turning invisible due to vanilla's 128 sprite limit! (Yeah, that coop run took us awhile :D). This gave me the idea to get monsters stuck at the spawn positions so they wouldn't bother me while attempting to kill the stuck Spectre. I did a practice run in PrBoom+ and it was a success! I decided to go for the real run on my DOS PC in DOOM2.EXE, the same way I first experienced this crazy map :D. As soon as the run was completed, I quickly copied the demo onto a floppy disk to transfer it to my modernish PC to view it in PrBoom+. Since vanilla doesn't show a kill counter on the automap, I didn't know for sure if the Spectre died (this is why I fired way more bullets than necessary to be safe). As soon as I saw 77/77 kills, I was super excited! I've completed a previously impossible challenge in commercial DOOM! Sure, it's the Master Levels, but it's still commercial DOOM!!! So yeah, I am very happy right now :D Special Thanks: decino Thank you so much for the excellent "DOOM Analysis" series and for the protip on how to kill the stuck Spectre! Your "Doom Challenges Deemed Impossible Update" video inspired me to achieve my first world record demo and the first truly 100% UV Max run of a map that is 5 years older than I am :D. Again, thank you :) Retro Thank you so much for playing DOOM with me over the past several months and playtesting my upcoming megawad! If it weren't for our coop run of this map on DOS, I probably wouldn't have thought to get the monsters stuck.
