In loving memory, created by Katelynn Rogers for all those who loved her, and especially those who attended her memorial service on February 17, 2018. Eulogy (by her daughter, Cassie Rogers Welliver) Today we gather here to celebrate a lost fighter. My mom has been a fighter all her life. From her childhood tomboy rivalries with her brothers, to her battles with her ex-husband for support and college tuition for her children, to her professional struggles with slum lords and organized crime to clean up Canton’s housing, to her final battle with the cancer that claimed her life. She always fought tenaciously, and despite the fact that her victories were always hard won and certainly far too infrequent, she was always a formidable opponent. Dee never stopped. She wholeheartedly crusaded for the downtrodden, the underdog, the bullied and the brutalized. God help you if you tried to hurt some person or demean some cause or candidate she cared for. Defiance, thy name is Ohio Democrat! She was well known for her fiery demeanor and unwavering spirit. She characterized herself as a rock-covered marshmallow. Tough on the outside, but crack that shell and you’d find a soft and beguiling heart. She raised three kids on her own as a single mother (with a bit of my help), and most people feel we turned out pretty well. Each of us are imbued with her fighting spirit and are emboldened by her legacy of struggle. I fight for the arts, Ryan fights for his patients, and Rick fights for our country. We gave her six grandchildren, who she absolutely adored. After retirement, her family, her garden and her nation were her life. Her 50-year smoking habit eventually caught up with her, and suddenly medical appointments and chemo treatments were her life. And then she was suddenly better, and we started making fresh plans for a future together, then just as suddenly, she was gone. If we can glean anything from her life it is that even in the face immeasurable odds, no matter the difficulties or obstacles, never stop fighting. Now she is finally at peace and it’s up to us to carry on her fight.
