I have decided to split this video into 2 because there is so much to tell. In this video, I am going to talk about some easier sorting activities for toddlers. When you are introducing sorting for the first time, you want to start with 2 categories. Here I have a central dish and 2 boxes on each side. I took red and blue lego duplo blocks and the child’s task is to sort them by colour. My son has just started with sorting activities so I am showing him how to do it. He is 20 months old. Here I have laminated this sheet of paper and these cut-out images and I have put some Velcro dots on each square and each cut-out. This activity is from my Toddler learning binder where you can find many sorting activities. Some are very easy and others are quite challenging. So, you just sort apples on one side and strawberries on the other side. .Then you can introduce 3 categories like this one where the child is sorting foam roses, wooden figurines and balls. So you see that you can give your child almost anything for simple sorting. This is the first time he is doing it and he is doing it well. Now, the child is sorting ducks, cats and pigs. There are 4 cards for each animal but all of them are different so he is not just matching the same picture, he needs to understand what it is to be a duck, a cat or a pig. When this task gets too easy for the child, I will add more animals. This is my older child, I gave her all the animal cards to sort. In case you want these cards and you have no time to prepare them, let me know below in the comment section. I will be happy to share the PDF with my subscribers. Here, my daughter is sorting some meadow animals. This task is ideal for 2-year-olds. There is a lot of pieces and putting all of them in order in so satisfying for them. And it teaches them some new vocabulary. This is also from my Toddler learning binder. Check my description box if you are interested. There are so many things your child can sort at home. And it is a very important skill to master. It is good for visual discrimination. By sorting, toddlers learn that some things are alike and some are different and that they can be organized into groups and also that the same items can be organized in several ways according to different criteria (for example by size, colour or shape). These activities can also help them with reading later on where they need to distinguish (among) different letters. In the next video I am going to present more complex sorting activities for children above the age of 3. Thank you for watching and see you next time.
