What Is It Next gen wifi like 4G or 5G but for home internet or a LAN or WLAN lines. Local area network connection. Before wifi 6 was wifi 5 then wifi 4. They have this number chain to identity wifi 6 802.11ax wifi 5 was 802.11ac… but we’re using single digit numbers to simplify. It will speed up your home internet… but not technically. If you have a specific allotment of speed for your cable or fiber… for me it’s 150Mbps down… wifi 6 won’t make my speeds FASTER than that, but it will make it more resourceful and use it’s power more wisely helping me get the most out of my internet which could give specific devices better speeds than they’re used to. Why is it helpful? WiFi 6 offers Smarter communication to and from devices. Instead of devices constantly checking in with the router/modem, wifi 6 can time out these check ins to happen at specific times, not all at once, that will make your network less congested AND save power on your battery operated devices.but if you’re streaming, or need that constant connection, wifi6 will prioritize that. It can also send data to multiple places at once. Think of it like you’re waiting in line at the waterpark to go down a slide. Instead of waiting in line going one by one, NOW there are multiple slides and you can all slide down at once, no more waiting in line. In internet terms we’re talking less lag less latency and more internet. Boo ya. This concept is also known as OFDMA or orthogonal frequency division multiple access. Upgraded from OFDM with WiFi 5… orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. Simply put, your uplink and downlink connections will drastically improve Do you need it? So it’s better faster and stronger, do you need? Nope. because of two main reasons….. First, not many devices can connect to wifi 6, it’s not built into most modern devices. Some of the only devices that can connect to it are iPhones SE and newer… galaxy devices S10 and newer, most phones and some laptops as new as 2019 have it (minus MacBooks!!)… so unless you keep only the newest and best devices around, this wifi6 won’t really benefit you. It’s also pretty expensive to break into… there are inexpensive modem/router options coming out…the best options right now are a few hundred bucks (up to 1K for a mesh system!!)…. So it might be good to wait it out a little as many people believe we’ll see that price drastically decrease this year. Bottom line: If you really want it, go for it!! If you like to prepare for future tech, or you already have enough capable wifi 6 devices, go for it. Upgrade to wifi 6! Wifi 6 modem/routers will still work with wifi 5 devices at wifi 5 speeds. Just focus on upgrading your devices 1 at a time. It doesn’t have to break the bank! Take your time and you’ll get there slowly but surely. However…. You night want to hold off on WiFi 6 and wait for wifi 6E to make more of an appearance. If WiFi 6 is the superhighway of WiFi connections, 6E is a bullet train!! Where 6 uses the same spectrums we’re used to of 2.5ghz and 5ghz, 6e ultilizes a WHOLE new wireless spectrum of 6Ghz which will make everything faster with little to no lagging or latency (depending of course on your overall internet connection.
