Back in the 1970s, Piper would wrestle across the country including stints in the California & Portland territories. During this time period, Moondog (Lonnie) Mayne was a huge star along with "Tough" Tony Borne (father of Matt Borne, the original Doink the Clown). Dow Owen was the promoter of the Portland territory when Roddy Piper started working there. According the Piper & Mr Fuji, Moondog would polish off a bottle of Southern Comfort every day. Mayne's run as the original Moondog would serve as the template for future Moondog incarnations including Moondog Rex, Moondog Spot and Moondog King. Tragically, Moondog Mayne was killed in a car accident on August 14th, 1978. Roddy Piper was one of the last people to speak to Moondog alive.
