What does it mean when a country repeatedly fails to speak up for its own people? When the voices of those causing harm are louder than the voices of those meant to prevent it? When soldiers sworn to protect a nation are being killed, and the highest offices in the land says nothing, pay no significant attention, take patronizing actions, implementing policies that waeken military resolve instead of decisive and sustainable actions? When Nigerians being are slaughtered across Nigeria during one of the most sacred periods in the Muslim and Christian religious calendars, and the silence that follows is deafening? These are not hypothetical questions. These are the conditions of Nigeria and Nigerians in 2026. In this episode of My Biafra Story series, we return to Dr. Richie Adewusi's deeply personal and historically significant book Biafra: Lest We Forget! — one of the most important civilian eyewitness accounts of the Biafra War ever committed to print. This time, we examine a thread that runs from the war directly into the present: the silence of a state that has never learned to account for the lives it loses, ignores, or simply forgets. During the Biafra War, children were swallowed by crowds and mostly never found. They walked through forests and refugee camps, invisible to every institution that should have known they existed, that is what happens in war situations. The war "ended", but the habit of institutional silence around suffering did not. And in 2026, that silence has only grown louder, which is to say, more dangerous. In this episode, we cover: The harrowing realities of what children experienced during the Biafra War, drawn directly from Dr. Adewusi's eyewitness account as a child victim of that war, and what it reveals about how Nigeria is still relating to its most vulnerable populations. How Nigeria arrived at 2026 still carrying the unresolved silences of that war, and why confronting them is not optional for any Nigerian who wants a stable future. The ongoing killing of Nigerian soldiers, the very people sworn to protect this country, and the absence of any meaningful response from political leadership. Why the loudest voices in Nigeria today belong to those doing the most harm, and what it means that everyone else has gone quiet. A government spokesperson's recent international television appearance and what it reveals about the state of communication and accountability at the highest levels of governance in Nigeria. Some Nigerian representatives abroad and why their qualifying credentials are symptoms of a much deeper problem within the current administration, and beyond. Sheikh Ahmad Gumi's call for bandits to participate in state-level discussions and benefits, and the dangerous precedent that position would set for every region or ethnic nationalities in Nigeria that has chosen peace over violence. The long and sobering history of Nigerians who paid the highest prices for speaking with integrity, from Ken Saro-Wiwa to MKO Abiola to Shehu Musa Yar'adua to Olusegun Obasanjo and others whose stories demand to be remembered. The role of Nigerian music as one of the few spaces where the unspeakable has always been spoken, and Dr. Sir Warrior's Hapum Meberi as a plea that is just as urgent today as when it was first recorded What people of conscience living in regions overwhelmed by violence must do, and why their silence is being read in ways they may not intend. Why all hope is not lost, and where the real work of rebuilding Nigeria must begin from. This is not a comfortable episode. It is not meant to be. It is meant to be honest, and to give every Nigerian watching it the information and the language to engage with what is happening in their country with open eyes.
