Simulation in 3D online virtual environments for learning basic motor skills in minimally invasive surgery. Is it possible using Leap Motion Controler ? The emergence of new "Natural User Interfaces" (NUIS) or Gesture-Based User Interfaces (GBUIs) like the Leap Motion Controler open a new road in the area of simulation for learning motor skills in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) . Currently within the framework of the PhD program in e-Learning at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), an interdisciplinary working group formed by a pediatric surgeon, engineers and education experts is designing a virtual 3D online environment for learning basic motor skills in MIS, using exercises from the Minimally Invasive Surgery Trainer-Virtual Reality (MIST-VR) and an additional from the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) program. The environment is designed in Unity and used as device for interaction with laparoscopic surgery forceps the Leap Motion Controler. We are currently defining and developing metrics to evaluate the performance and the types of feedback that the environment will provide to the learner. These two steps are crucial because otherwise we would be talking about a video game more. The thesis seeks to demonstrate that it is possible to learn basic motor skills in MIS using 3D virtual environments mediated by NUIs like the Leap Motion Controler. If it can be shown that 3D virtual environments on line mediated by NUIs facilitate the learning of motor skills in MIS, a new field of research and development in the field of surgical simulation will be open. Moreover, it could be possible to learn motor skills in MIS anytime, anywhere and with very low cost devices (ubiquitous-learning); we would speak then of ubiquitous-training. Similarly, a tool with the features described facilitate the "warming up" before surgery.
