Richard Shireby & Mr Chippie demonstrate the I-177 vintage valve tester. This video is a short extract from a forthcoming video still in progress which covers the re-crystaling of a 1968 Pye F27AM base station radio that we are putting on 4M AM, on 70.260Mhz which is the centre of AM 4 metre activity here in the UK. The I-177 (Hickok) is a mutual conductance instrument which although 75 years old is a great piece of equipment. I realised that we hadn't done a video on the I-177 valve tester hence this extract. Being an American instrument, the I-177 valve tester operates from 117V so off camera, the unit is plugged into a step-down transformer from our UK 230V mains. Although Mr Chippie has been an electronics engineer for 30 years, he has had no valve experience until about a year ago, when I introduced him to world of real radio.....that glows in the dark.
