A speed eating contest in Changhua caused controversy last week among health-conscious gourmets. Participants had been challenged to eat five bowls of braised pork belly on rice in eight minutes, to celebrate and promote the local delicacy. Doctors say eating large quantities of food so fast is no good for digestion. And the director of a hospital in the county even went as far as saying that wolfing the food down was disrespectful to the local cuisine. Changhua recently held a braised pork belly festival, which included a speed eating competition that attracted 150 participants. The challenge was to eat five bowls of the delicacy in under eight minutes. The event was berated by the superintendent of Yuanlin Christian Hospital on social media. Dr. Chen Shou-tung said that the contest was unhealthy, adding that good food was meant to be savored, and that wolfing down the delicacy was an insult to Changhua and its cuisine. Deaths have been reported in connection to this practice. Healthcare professionals discourage speed eating as a means to promote local delicacies. Public opinion is more divided.
